I joined KDSAP because it’s one of the few groups at Harvard that allows students to engage directly with community health. I find it rewarding to interact with patients at our kidney disease screenings, whether it’s helping them fill out a medical history questionnaire or measuring their blood glucose levels. A highlight of each screening is hearing from our mentor Dr. Hsiao about an interesting case that she saw that day. I learn something new about medicine and about service every time I volunteer with KDSAP.
The desire to pursue work within public health and community outreach tailored specifically to underserved communities is a direct result of the amazing experiences and growth I had throughout my work with KDSAP.
KDSAP played such an integral role in providing me with clinical opportunities, introducing me to preventative medicine, and showing me the importance of nephrology and kidney function.
We are grateful to have such amazing professionals who devote their lives to helping our community stay healthy. By teaching about kidney health and by testing the kidney function levels of our community members, your team has improved the well-being of many people.
To say that KDSAP had a significant impact on my life would be an understatement… I was originally drawn to KDSAP because I valued its mission of providing healthcare to medically underserved individuals. However, little did I know that I would benefit just as much from the organization as the community did.
Leading Pitt KDSAP for three years revealed a consistent relationship: the more people were educated, the more they proactively cared for their health and thus reduced their susceptibility to ailments such as CKD. As a physician, I hope to emphasize this connection between health and education and therefore promote community wellness.
For every major decision in my career, I know I will always reflect back upon KDSAP’s heartfelt mission of serving the community for guidance and inspiration.
